Summary

This study aims to highlight the evolution of Propertius’s elegiac poetry. After three successful books centered on his complex love for Cynthia, the poet shifts his thematic focus - as announced in Elegy 4.1, partly through the ironic persona of an astrologer (his "alter ego") – to create a cycle of five elegies dedicated to the origins (*aitia*) of cults and names of various places of Rome. The result is an (inter)cultural urban "journey", influenced in part by Augustus, but mostly unusual and original, that was later appreciated and imitated by Ovid.
