“Myth today”

This lecture will present an innovative reflection on myth from a contemporary perspective. The ancient, medieval, and modern myths are studied in the light of factors shaping today’s society: the phenomenon of globalisation, the doxa of relativism and the logic of immanence.

It will set out some criteria for distinguishing the authentic myth from its substitutes (individual sublimations and collective deformations): Antigone, Don Juan or Dracula versus Prozac, Madame Bovary, or Marilyn Monroe.

This lecture will adopt the definition of myth according to cultural myth criticism theory, that is, as “a functional, symbolic and thematic narrative of extraordinary events with a transcendent, sacred and supernatural referent; that lacks, in principle, historical testimony; and that refers to an individual or collective, but always absolute, cosmogony or eschatology”.
